Doe is a Brighton born and bred Singer-Songwriter, Multi-instrumentalist, Record producer, Actor and Vocal Coach. Over the past decade he has built a portfolio career in the entertainment industry with special interest in Music. His professional career as a performer (actor/ musician) began at age 7 with his first professional appearance for Carlton Television.
The past 2 years has seen Doe develop a few key areas with his efforts focused on Directing and Producing music for theatre, Vocal Coaching and writing new material set for release in 2019.

Vocal Health & Technique: Breathing, Posture, Tone Generation
Everlasting and healthy singing is based on these simple, yet very important principals. By referring to vocal health, we’re implying the day to day maintenance of ones vocal chords. With exercises that can be practised on a daily basis, we strengthen the muscles that support the diaphragm. Just like other parts of our body, certains muscles need to become more flexible while others need to be strengthened.
Tone generation is the term used to explain where a note is being supported from. Generally speaking, untrained singers although can generate a pleasing tone, often aren’t generating or supporting that note from the correct place in the anatomy, which is unsustainable and can lead to vocal damage.
Unsurprisingly, correct posture also has great benefits for singing; it can account almost instantly for a noticeable improvement on the singer’s tonal properties and range.
Championed by London’s Royal College Of Music, reverse breathing has been employed by classically trained opera singers for centuries. Perfecting this style of breathing can account for a significant increase in volume.
Pitch, Manipulation & Tonal Placement
While training pitch, we work on instigating muscle memory to obtain perfect intonation and fine tune intervals. It’s important for a singer to be able to move through complex intervals with great ease.
The process by which professional singers consciously choose which part of their body they wish to resonate a note in, is called tonal placement. Unlike vocal health maintenance, in the context of a song a note can resonate in several places in the body. According to which part of the body a note resonates in, it will change its tonal qualities. For example, if you’re looking for a harsher trumpet like tone, to make a note stick out or stand out, you may choose to send your placement into the nasal cavity.
Precision, Power & Control
Precision refers to the detail of the overall vocal delivery. Through critical listening and practice, one can obtain the ear for detail and remove any unwanted or unintentional effects from their singing.
Control implies a number of things such as, consistency in volume, using techniques accurately in the context of a song.
Power, sometimes also referred to as belting, is about learning the maximum volume that you are capable of, in a healthy way. Your greatest power comes from perfecting the simultaneous firing of the 3 key parts of the singing anatomy.
Effects & Stylistics
While working on stylistics, a singer learns multiple ways to sing the same phrases but in different styles. Being able to mimic and effectively understand the various singing styles, ultimately helps a singer to better harness their personal musical influences.
Effects in singing are techniques such as aspirate tone, growling, crooning or adding gravel/ distortion.
Language & Rhythm
Singing is the instrument that has the greatest connection to language. Learning how to manipulate language to fit over melody, without sacrificing meaning is of utmost important for any lyricist. This compound skill includes numerous elements from more general principles of articulation, controlling the lips and tongue, to stamina for rhythmic dexterity.
Rhythm and language become closely intertwined as the former is used to manipulate the latter. By studying and better understanding the relationships between lyric stanzas and musical phrasing, a singer can optimise their overall vocal delivery.
Metaphorically speaking, if all of the above were ingredients, this is the singer’s personal recipe. These are the conscious choices of how all the learned techniques, and a singers musical influences are mixed in action. Creating an authentic sonic image is like building and fine tuning your unique instrument. The most successful artists have the most unique sonic image; whether they are singing someone else’s song or their own composition, it unmistakable sound like them.
As a singer, you will receive the undivided attention of the average concert goer. It will come down to you to captivate the audience and keep them entertained and wanting for more throughout the show.
The amalgamation of all the above, comes together in a nice tidy package, often not lasting more than 3 minutes (average pop song length). However this also includes every moment in between songs, your introductions, anecdotes, presentation, physical performance.
The stuff they’ll never tell you...
Creating your voice as an instrument and an authentic representation of yourself, requires overcoming a few psychological barriers. During your training you will need to tackle potentially both conscious and subconscious psychological challenges. Topics that often come up during training are self criticism, expectation management, emotional resilience, self discipline, patience, authenticity, self esteem and confidence…
If these issues are left unchecked, they may very well manifest themselves during a performance. Underlying negative psychological problems can have an impact on the singer’s confidence which will in turn be reflect on their technique. Lacking confidence means that the singer will never try to reach outside their singing comfort zone, thus never truly unlocking their full potential. It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock ‘n’ roll!
